 What is Artificial Intelligence Literacy?

For many, the term AI refers to everything that they’ve read about or seen in science-fiction books and movies. The image of terrifying robots trying to take over the world doesn’t showcase the true meaning of AI — its use expands to everyday life.

AI is a computer’s ability to understand various tasks in one go and help in decision-making. This is a broad definition of the term. The right way to describe AI is that it’s a system that uses complex algorithms that identify different patterns, make predictions, and help with decision-making.

Today, AI is present when you’re shopping online, for business marketing, in social media, and so much more.

Who Can Learn Artificial Intelligence Literacy?

At NextWaveSTEM®, we offer STEM Artificial Intelligence courses for kids and professional development for teachers.

Grade K-2

Introduction to AI Literacy: Lions, and Tigers, and an Introduction to AI!

Over these lessons, early elementary students will complete hands-on activities introducing them to basic AI, robotics, and machine learning concepts as they solve a variety of zoo-themed challenges at Zapsville Zoo!

Tools/Software/Technical Requirements: Computers/tablets with internet access, access to Scratch Jr.

Grade 3-5

Discovery of AI Literacy: ARTificial Intelligence Artists

When science and art merge, what do we get? Wonder. Students will explore various artistic mediums and the core concepts of artificial intelligence as they unleash their inner-creative through ten "wonder"-based lessons.

Tools/Software/Technical Requirements: Computers/tablets with internet access, access: to Teachable Machine, Google AI Experiments, Posnet, Reface.

Grade 6-8

Exploration of AI Literacy:
Character AIsland

Welcome to Character AIsland: a digital paradise where you can meet and interact with AI replicas of celebrities, fictional characters, historical figures, and even yourself! Students will explore text, voice, image recognition, and chatbots.

Tools/Software/Technical Requirements: Computers/tablets with internet access, access to Scratch, access to Machine Learning for Kids.

Grades 9-12

Creation & Evaluation of Advanced Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence Literacy

In this high school STEM course, students will learn about the prevalence, applications, and potential for computers and artificial intelligence. As they gain an understanding of the importance and challenges of image analysis and build data sets in order to train machine learning algorithms, students will consolidate their knowledge through machine learning and augmented reality applications. From facial recognition to autonomous cars, they will discover that computers and artificial intelligence are everywhere around us! Learn more about our 9-12 STEM education program.

Tools/Software/Technical Requirements: PC/Mac computers

Why Artificial Intelligence Literacy?

Why should we learn and teach AI? The world is changing at a breakneck pace for you and your students. Students are digital natives and affecting change in ways that would have been difficult to imagine even one generation ago.

The new world that students are growing up in and living in now isn’t just being built using code but also increasingly using artificial intelligence.
